Last Transmission ever! – wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #48: John Daly

So we have some sad news, we will be making this upcoming Transmission our last one for the foreseeable future.
We have decided that we are moving wahwah.fm into a whole new terrain and dedicating more time to marketing activities directly related to within the app.

Having said that Transmission has come a long way since it started earnestly back in June 2011, with our resident Brazilian DJ Andre Wakko. Continue reading

wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #47: Chymera

Transmission is reaching its final session for April and what a journey it’s been. Looking back it’s been such a whirlwind of great music, starting with Deadbeat’s hypnotic dub-techno session, going through Chaim and Philip Bader’s clubby tech-house beats, and now finally moving to a live session with Chymera. This Irish producer is just about to release a brand new artist album and we expect to see this week some wild controller/pads action in a very special live session from our studio.

wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #46: Philip Bader

We’re half way through April and Transmission is moving forward with its great house music program. Shows are becoming funkier and sexier by the minute and it’s hard to see how we could possibly top Chaim’s set from last week. But have no fear, Transmission #46 will be delivering another top notch DJ -Philip Bader.

Berlin’s own, Philip has rocked the floors of night clubs right across the techno capital, continuing onto an international career that includes spinning records on every corner of the continent. Another reason for us to be happy in hosting Philip on the show is that it’s been a while since the last time we had a DJ who actually grew up here in the city.
Over the years Philip was involved with the legendary Bar 25 crew, he set up his own lable Dantze back in 2006, and he has just released his debut artist album “Wishful Thinking” on another famous Berlin imprint – Highgrade records. On the show expect Philip to play tracks from the album alongside other surprises he has up his sleeve. It’s going to be a blast :)

Like always, tuning in works through live.wahwah.fm. Show will kick off on Wednesday, April 18th at 8pm CEST sharp, so don’t be late!

wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #45: Chaim

Whether you’re into Easter, Passover or any other mid April holiday, this time of year has something for everyone. And in order to make things even more festive the Transmission crew decided to organize a special show with music brought to you exclusively by the wonderful DJ Chaim of the label BPitch Control.

Chaim, hailing all the way from the arid lands of Isreal, has established himself in recent years as a name to look out for. He released a number of 12″s on Guy Gerber’s Supplement Facts label as well as on the world renowned Cocoon where he collaborated with Stephan Bodzin. But for the last four years the man has been working exclusively with Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control, and is standing in the forefront of the label’s new row of stars. His first full album ‘Alive’ dropped last year, where Chaim demonstrated his skills both as a producer of dance floor bombs as well as more song like tracks that can be listend at home, and in all of them you can hear his highly refined house sound running through.

As we mentioned already this is holiday season, and since Chaim was back in Israel with his family we literally had to drag him away from his dinner table to come to the decks and mix a set for you. We will play the recording tonight which includes the latest beats from his secret library.

Like always, show kicks off at 8pm CEST and you can tune in through live.wahwah.fm or the Transmission station in the wahwah.fm app.

Thursday’s +1: wahwah.fm and Lomography round 2!

After the big success of our last team up with Lomography it was clear that we’d have to round up another camera to give away. So now we present to you our version of lomo love, round zwei!

We called the good people at Lomography and asked them to send a camera in your direction. This time they offered us the fabulous Fisheye One camera, which you can see on the flyer on the left. As the name says, this camera features a fish eye lens that can help you produce some extra funky looking photos, and the good news is that getting your hands on it is as easy as sending us an email. All you need to do is send an email to thursday1@wahwah.fm with ->Lomography<- in the subject line. You have until the 11th of April at 23.59. We will then pick a random lucky winner.

And in case you haven’t done so yet, hurry up and tap into the Lomography channel inside the wahwah.fm app, playing their top 20 favorite tracks to soundtrack your photo shooting. You can download the app for free right here.

wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #44: Deadbeat

Canadian techno producer Deadbeat is one man we’ve been wanting to host on Transmission for a long time but somehow it never worked out, our calendars just never aligned. But the moment has finally come and we nabbed him in our Transmission bag. We’re happy to announce he will be airing two hours worth of versatile dynamic electronic music this coming Wedednsay at 8pm.

Deadbeat goes by the name Scott Monteith in daily life and his reputation preceeds him: instead of falling into the same minimalistic techno cliché like so many DJ’s do, Scott has immersed himself over the years in puristic Kingston dub and reggae sounds, hybridising it with techno to create something quite unique. His EP’s and albums regularly enjoy critical acclaim, not to mention the invitations to pass on his knowledge to new generations of producers on events like MUTEK and the Red Bull Music Academy. But like every true specialist Deadbeat does not limit himself to one style only as his remixes for producers like Efdemin and Scuba well prove. That means that come this Wednesday we expect to hear all kinds of fresh music. Continue reading

wahwah.fm office playlist: March

The month of March has now passed, and it is up to us to supply you with some new music courtesy of our great staff members.
Just a handful of staff joined us this week, that’s because they are hard at work solidifying the app and we didn’t want to disturb them.
Coming back from SXSW i picked up some great new music, if any of you get the chance try and listen to these great new acts: Trust from Canada, Of Monsters and Men from Iceland, Daughter whose being billed as the new Florence plus one of the funnest and quirkiest shows i’ve seen in a long time from Asian-American and new signing to Thrill Jockey Dustin Wong.
I was chuffed to see one of my favourite acts, Main Attrakionz live at the Spin party play one of their standout tracks, “Perfect Skies”, i filmed it for you:

wahwah.fm Transmission DJ #43: Peter Van Hoesen

Last summer I visited a small weekend festival on the outskirts of Berlin. The lineup was mostly deep house DJs, with the exception of one Peter Van Hoesen in between playing a long night set. Not including any tracks you’d describe as remotely close to easy listening, the music literally hit you and this time around you did feel pain. Every kick drum going well into your gut and ribs cage, that night was marked with uncontrolled raving and dust clouds raised by thumping feet, going high into the sky. Forget about chatting up girls or effortlessly moving your hands, it was an intense experience with music in your face, demanding and rewarding alike.

So with that in mind we’re honored to host the renowned Belgium producer on Transmission this week for an appropriate closure of our techno month. Between recently releasing a new EP titled Transitional State and working on new projects I caught up with Peter for a small chat and brought up the subject of why he makes music that is both so mentally and physically demanding
PVH: Definitely it is. Especially when playing techno I want the experience to be something physical Continue reading

We Like: Giraffage

Whilst I was out and about in the United States, scouring for nooks and crevices to fill wahwah.fm into, I came across this great San Franciscan artist called Giraffage.

Very much in the vein of Gold Panda, El Guincho or Korallreven, Giraffage makes this kind of dreamy, sequenced electro-pop that you can’t help but not ignore. It stutters and hops, but in a really great positive way, like if you were bouncing along in a cartoon or frolicking out in the open.

Charlie Yin is the man behind the sound and he’s been making this music for just a few years. Already positively featured in renowned music mag XLR8R – Yin is onto something good. Even though it’s a one man show when you actually see it on stage like I did it sounds as if he’s got a full band together, really full of life. There’s a healthy dose of hip-hop instrumental influence in there like J Dilla or Ubiquity Records.
His debut LP Comfort was released late last year and you can download it right here.

Our pick of the album is stomping gorgeous anthem Elysian, check it out:

New artist station: Modeselektor

How can we even start talking about Modeselektor? It feels as if half the world has been raving about those guys forever, and the other half just joined in after the duo’s last album Monkeytown dropped at the end of last year. And when we say ‘dropped’, we mean it like when your’e dancing all night and the party is right and the DJ is building up the tension until the point you think you can’t hold it anymore, and then he dropps that one track that turns the place upside down and makes you rethink everything you ever knew about partying. That kind of ‘dropped’.

But you know all that, as much as Thom Yorke knew it when he joined Modeselektor for not one but two tracks on the album. And if that’s not enough, the Berlin duo just won the critics choice award on the last Echo Awards (the German parallel to the Grammys or Brit awards), making their star status now official.

Now the point behind this long intro is that as of today there will be an official Modeselektor channel in wahwah.fm. We asked Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary if they will be willing to share some music, and they came up with the brilliant idea of playing just for you some of their favorite tracks, all by artists from their home labels Monkeytown Records and 50WEAPONS. So expect tunes by Cosmic TRG, Anstam, Marcel Dettmann, the Modeselektor guys themselves and many more.

The new station will be broadcasting around the clock and tuning in couldn’t be easier. Simply go to the Recommended section inside the wahwah.fm app and the station will automatically pop up infront of you. Alternatively you can look up the station directly through the search function on the top left corner of the Radios Around screen. And if you still don’t have the app you can download it for free right here. Enjoy!
